Little Fox Farm | OUR STORY

Hi, we’re Nate and Erin Mcmanus, together with our two awesome children Oliver & Nora, and one sweet old dog Jack we have built this happy little place- our Little Fox Farm.

Everything we are and everything we do comes from our families. The Courtade and McManus families have long-time farming roots in the Old Mission and Traverse City area. Our childhood memories probably don’t look like most and for that, we are so grateful. We met and dated in high school where we bonded over our farming connection and Erin’s ability to make a mean blizzard (her first outside job was at Dairy Queen).

Erin grew up with her four sisters helping run the family produce farm. Some of my favorite childhood memories happened in the raspberry patch, eating more than made it in the quarts and chatting about life with my built-in best friends.

At that time, a little glimmer of an idea began to form. We joked that day that selling flowers is a lot like selling ice cream- there’s never a bad day because it just makes people happy! Fast forward a few years, we found the perfectly imperfect piece of property and decided to make a go of it!

Nate’s grandmother on his mom’s side grew up running her family nursery. When she finally decided to shut the doors in 2018, she called Nate to see if he knew anyone who needed her leftover plants. At the time Nate’s landscaping business Oliver and Company Property Solutions was just starting out and she thought maybe he could use them for a few jobs. When we arrived to pick up the “few plants” she had left, we were floored to find hundreds of daylilies and countless other plants. There was no way we were going to let those plants go to waste- it would have broken Grandma Shirley’s heart! So we loaded up truckloads and filled our garden beds and yard and we had our first ever plant sale, which turned out to be a huge success! We were able to make enough money to help Nate’s grandparents and spread some cheer at the same time. Win-win!

Starting a new business during this uncertain time certainly isn’t ideal and probably more than a little risky, yet somehow this dream of ours coming together, right now, at THIS time, could not be more perfect. People need gardens more than ever. We need homegrown tomatoes and beautiful flowers and something to do with our hands. Whatever you’re looking for- a gorgeous hydrangea for that perfect spot in your yard, plants to stock your garden and feed your family or just a bright spot in your day- we hope you’ll find it here.
